Here’s New Material, the new album written and recorded between September 12 and October 3, 2009. Recorded in my closet on a Tascam Porta 03 four track, although I had to crack open Audacity a few times to record the vocals (ran out of tracks on the machine), but hey. Hard copies are forthcoming. In the meantime, I’m recording a bunch of sloppy cover songs for fun along with more Delayed Flights material for disclosure at some point later awn.

Back to basics I’ve been. No overdub extravagance. No punch-in fixes. I forgot how much fun, kick, challenge and honesty a TASCAM four-track enforces. I’m also surprised (or maybe not) at how difficult a time I’ve had finding blank cassette tapes, let alone the ideal ones. Type II high-bias tapes are the right match for these old four-tracks, but of course my requests at Best Buy and places similar have simply been, “Got any blank cassette tapes?” When the staffer points me to the micro-cassettes, I say, “No, just standard, blank tapes.” Then I get a look, soon followed by a confused head-shake. Oh well. Gotta buy ‘em online when my current supply dries, I guess. As for news, I’ll have some new Delayed Flights stuff up soon.

UPDATE 9/19/09: The new release–I don’t yet know whether it will be a full length, EP or a split with another band–is tentatively titled New Material and will be ready when I ring the bell.

Delayed Flights ‘Drag’ (2003)

First, an editor’s note: Some of the links I’d depended upon died prematurely. But they’re fixed now. So’s cool. And now, the post on the Drag recording.

Recorded on my now-dead TASCAM Porta 07 sometime in 2003 if not the year prior. Moody stuff. The first song, “Till,” went down with an el cheapo keyboard that I’m pretty sure came from Brendles circa 1988. Also appearing is the acoustic guitar that would be stolen from my car the following year or so. “Mess of things,” same keyboard with a fizzling Les Paul Jr.-copy and Peavy practice amp. I have no idea what I was going for on the third song. I’m also only half-sure I applied the name Delayed Flights to this. But hey.

…from late ’00, early ’01. Moody acoustic stuff under the name Red Admiral, for which I received an essential cease-and-desist from another band trying to make a career with the name. Funny, never heard from them again. Anyway, I’ll upload that stuff in the coming days.

UPDATE 9/5/09: Yes, probably this weekend. But I thought I’d add that you are excited to know I’m back in TASCAM tapeland and its about to be gangbusters. Oh, oh, and I found more recordings on top of the other more recordings. Check back.

The Plaintiffs EP (2005)

Once I’d put to bed a ton of Situation Room and Delayed Flights material, I had the hankering to do a Ramones-type recording, which ended up ripping off the Riverdales more than any. But funny enough, out of all my one-man bedroom projects, this is the one that actually became a real band. As for the beginning, I recorded a ton of these songs over summer 2005 and I guess I’d made my point with the seven best of them, which I put on CD and handed around. One way or another, the disc made it to Jim Sossamon (son of Cykle‘s Jimmy Sossamon), who’d already worked out the songs with bassist Bryan Register and said, “C’mon.” We practiced, got the songs easily enough and played several shows before Bryan moved to Florida. I have more recordings of the fully-staffed Plaintiffs and I’ll post them at a later date. For now, here’s the original.

Frantic Calls EP (2005)

I released this one a few different times (mostly on the web) and under a few different names. My fave among them was Frantic Calls, so we’ll keep with that one. I recorded these songs on a March 2005 afternoon with a cheap, overdriven practice amp, a knock-off SG and an SM-57 microphone with a baby mitten over it to muffle out the vocal pops. What came out is pretty straightforward save for the slapback effect hanging all over the vocals, and subsequently most else. Always liked this one.

Pterodactyl (2004)

Pushing everything into the red was the goal of this one, and I say so as a warning: Tilt your volume knobs down a hair because it gets fairly blasty. Again, that’s sorta the idea. I know I recorded more than three songs as Pterodactyl (dumb name) but that’s the number I’ve turned up so far. I remember recording at least two of these at 3 a.m. with a small pair of Sony headphones that drove my ears red, while some sort of sleepless urgency sent the mixer’s knobs north. These songs were included on an earlier incarnation of I Want to Die in Outer Space, but were later withdrawn because I thought they watered the album down. Plus, it wasn’t a natural fit. They stand better on their own, I think.

Simple Songs EP (2001)

Four easygoing acoustic songs recorded to a TASCAM four-track sometime in 2001. They didn’t really go any farther than the instant archive, and, matter of possible fact, I only burned them to disc once for my buddy Raf. Years later, I’d ask him if he still had his copy, because I’d no longer mine. Thankfully, he did, and upon listening again I sorta re-adopted the songs into whatever acoustic set I had at the time. Coolest part, though, was the cover: “Boyfriendship,” by Noise Addict. Always dug that song. To my knowledge, I never named the originals, so they come as “One,” “Two” and “Four.” I tell you this because I don’t want you to think I’m just being hip and nifty. That’d be weak. This is also in memory of the great, black Martin I used to record these songs. It was stolen from my car years ago. Later, I’d take a therapeutic revenge in the song “Guitar Thieves,” which you hear on I Want to Die in Outer Space.
